Samantha Kershen

Samantha, give our readers a brief intro about what you do and how you got started.

We are a mobile outpatient clinic and provide physical therapy and wellness services in the comfort of the patients' home, gym or workplace. We are currently in the process of expanding to offer occupational therapy services as well.

We primarily work with 2 populations! We work with older adults to maximize their function and allow them to remain strong and independent in the community. We also specialize in helping busy professionals who struggle with pain related to sitting at a desk for long hours, and who may not have the available time to leave their workplace to go see a therapist.

I started my practice after working in several busy outpatient clinics in which I was expected to see multiple patients concurrently and couldn't provide the quality of care I knew my patients deserved. I felt completely drained from the workload, and I had an inner knowing that I could provide better care if I was able to practice differently.

What have been your biggest challenge(s) so far?

So far my biggest challenges have been learning how to scale my business. Physical therapy school is great for teaching us how to treat patients, but they don't teach how to run a business! It is a process, but I am enjoying learning how to run a practice and having the ability to do things the way I see fit.

What you’re most proud of / what readers should know about your work / what sets you apart from others.

The best feeling in the world is removing a patient's fear surrounding movement, getting stronger and doing challenging things. Too many patients are scared to do functional tasks including squatting, bending over to pick something up off the ground, and lifting packages. They are scared that if they have "bad posture" or move the "wrong way" they will harm their spines. Unfortunately, there are also too many therapists who instill and reinforce this fear in their patients.

As someone who has earned a doctorate in physical therapy, competed in powerlifting and has been an avid gym-goer for 14 years, I have the experience and knowledge to safely help people of any age get stronger and achieve their goals.

I pride myself on showing patients that they are capable of doing hard things, their bodies and spines are resilient and not easily breakable, and that as long as movements and exercises are progressed slowly over time, the human body can adapt to any movement pattern or exercise.

What does success mean to you / what gives you most gratitude?

When a patient comes to me and tells me that they are able to do "life" activities that they weren't able to do before or that they were avoiding out of fear, that is success to me. I also love seeing patients get stronger in the gym and the joy on their faces when they are able to use heavier weights or do balance exercises without holding on.

It makes my day to hear that a patient was able to put a case of water bottles into their car without pain or difficulty, get into/out of their car more easily, walk from their car into a restaurant with their family without having to stop and take a break, or get through a work day without nagging pain.

What do you think is most unique about the city/population of Boca Raton and working with this community?

People in Boca Raton enjoy life and being active! We are so lucky to live in this beautiful community by the ocean. We live in paradise and it is so fun hanging out with residents of Boca and hearing about where they like to hangout. I have learned about many new restaurants and nightlife spots through my patients.
